Meet Leigh and her pony Bubbles:
Leigh had been going to weekly riding
lessons for nearly a year when in
February 2008, to her delight, her parents
bought her Bubbles..... her very own
pony. Bubbles was installed in a large field
near her home but from the very start
there was a problem..... Bubbles did not
like to be caught.
Enter Marte and clicker training....The first
question was to determine what was the
source of Bubbles problem. It was quickly
identified as a saddle problem and
consequently a sore back. After several
weeks rest a new saddle was purchased
but the catching problem remained, so
Leigh learned how to clicker train her pony.
Over time this problem grew until it
was taking 12-year old Leigh and at
least one other helper up to an hour to
corner and catch Bubbles so that he
could be ridden. Fitness levels improved
with all Leigh's family members!
Within a short space of time the picture had changed
dramatically. Bubbles now comes cantering up to his owner. He
works alongside her at liberty and stands like an angel for
grooming and tacking-up. Leigh has transformed her pony into an
eager and enthusiastic partner.
They tried food but Bubbles quickly
learned how to grab a mouthful from
the bucket and scoot away! Even when
caught and tied he was reluctant to
stand for grooming and tacking up.
And 12 year old Leigh taught this to Bubbles herself!
